Questions on this lesson...
I'm trying to tune my guitar by ear. And it isn't going so well. Then, I noticed that you have more little white dots on your guitar than I do. You have 9 while I have 5. I also noticed mine is very short. I thought that is could possibly be the problem to tuning my first string (thinnest) yours sounds like "deee" and ends shortly after it is started and mine sounds more like a dead "duh" and takes forever to end. How would I tune this type of guitar?

That's just the style and sound of your guitar.

It's is tuned the same way. Same frets, etc. no matter if they have dots or not. It's the fret wires that matter not the dots.

Deeeee or duuuuuh. It's also possible the duuuuh can be an octave lower than the deeeeee. But I don;t want to tell you to crank it up tighter because it might break.

You really need a tuner or some sort of tuning reference to get at least one string in tune.

Yes, it is. Guitar mode is for people who can't remember what notes go on what strings ;)

hey guys,

my question is: when tuning the first string (1E), is it ok if the electronic tuner flickers between 6e and 1e, or should it stay steady?

thanks.

It's probably okay, but it sounds like you need a better tuner if it has problems locking onto the correct octave.

Thanks for the suggestion. I own a Korg Ga-1. Is there one that is both affordable and better quality than the aforementioned tuner?

I use a pretty cheap Korg CA-30 chromatic tuner.  But before you spend money on a tuner make sure you are muting the low e string by lightly touching it to make sure its not ringing while you are tuning the high e.

Just occurred to me that might be what is going on.

I tried your suggestion to no avail. Thank you anyway. I might bring my guitar to a shop to have it looked at to make sure that it's not a problem with the strings or something.

Stoic.. I have the same tuner. Korg GA-1. Mine does that too. It still gets the string in tune though so don't sweat it. If all else fails.. play open e and b string 5th fret... they should sound like exactly the same note.

ahhh...such a simple solution and i didn't even think of it. playing the two string made it obvious that the guitar was in tune. thanks again everyone

Hi. There are many electronic tuner apps for the iPad in the iTunes store. I was wondering if I could use one of them to tune my guitar. Any suggestions on which one I should get? Thanks.

I get good results with the 'Polytune' app:

I'm sure others work just fine, too.

So the guy walks in, picks up my guitar, ripples off a quick little burst of "So What" and then peers at me over his glasses. "You tune this?"

I nodded.

"What did you use?"

I wave my Korg TM-50 at him.

"Pfft!" A hiss of contempt. He fiddles around with the pegs until he has it to his liking, and goes back to "So What"

Fifteen minutes later my guitar tutor arrives. "OK," he says, jovially. "Have you tuned it up?"

"Sure." I run my thumb down the strings. His eyebrows shoot up, and he switches on the Korg. I pluck the 6th string, and the needle flickers red. I retune the guitar.

You don't know this guy?
My response would have been. "You touch my guitar once more with out asking and I'll break your fingers.

That's just plain rude.

Please help, I am having difficulty tuning to correct pitch. The lower three strings are fine.

6th Low E  -  82.1Hz     - E2
5th        A  - 100.0 Hz   - A2
4th        D  - 146.83 Hz  -D3

The problem is with the higher three strings, they are tuned to G2 / B2 / E2 if I try to raise them to  the correct pitch G3 /B3 / E4 the strings break before they reach that tension.

I am pretty sure that they should be tuned to G3 B3 and E4 (not G2, B2, E2).

Edit: sorry, I obviously did not read correctly. Please ignore.

What are you using to tune your Guitar? Is it set to the correct setting.

Compare your tuner with this.

Thank you Stich101,

I have been using an iPhone app named Guitar Toolkit, it appears to be giving incorrect readings.

Check your app to make sure it's set to A 440.
It's a;so a good idea to learn to tune your guitar by ear using harmonics on your guitar.
