I found when playing around with this lick, that it actually works (not only as position 1 in E blues), but as position 3 in B blues. ie. although this lick works over E as chord 1, it works just as well over E as chord 4.
That way you're not adding a 9th and a b9th, your just playing notes from the B blues scale (with that 'funny' note being the blue note - b5)
