Cost of truss rod adjustment?
« on: August 25, 2009, 01:30:34 pm »
Hey guys

Anyone know the average cost of a truss rod adjustment? (acoustic) I don't need a full setup, I like the action how it is normally. I just went up a string gauge and it's bowing the neck a little more than I would like and making my previously perfect action a bit higher. Thing is the guitar is only worth about £120, so if adjustments cost loads I might be a bit unwilling to pay it and just put up with a slightly higher action.

Thanks

Not many places that will break down a setup to "a bit of a tweak here", you need to keep in mind that the truss rod is one of the first thing you set. While you might be happy with your old action there's no guarantee that just tweaking the truss rod will achieve your aim.

I would suggest you return to the lighter gauge strings.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
The cost therefore, is a set of strings.

Ok. So how much does a set up cost?

Changing to heavier strings was kind of the point. The 12's I put on definately have more volume and tone than the 11's I had on before.

Thanks

You are asking on an international forum about the cost of a setup. In Austin, TX, where I live, a setup runs anywhere from $30 (by a local tech I know & trust) to $75 (charged at a large music store in town) or more. Here's a simple competency test for you - if a luthier offers you a price for the truss rod adjustment by itself, he doesn't know what he's doing.

More to the point, a guitar worth £1 that you love to play is well worth a £25 setup performed by a competent luthier.

Average UK setup cost is about £40.... We get ripped off on just about everything. :(

That's outrageous! The price for one over here is more like £10 I think, or around $25.

True Tourniquet, but that's the best incentive there is to learn how to do it yourself.

I've only ever paid for one and that's 'cos I wasn't over confident at the time about cutting and shaving away at my acoustic.

Here in Columbus Ohio, the average is about $50. I trust the experts in the local shops  more then those in the big chains although you may pay a tad more in the local shop (Just my experiences).
